Antique Belgian Painting of a Young Girl With Her Dog by Charles Michel (1874 – 1967)

This beautiful antique painting depicts a young girl with her dog and was created by the Belgian artist Charles Michel (1874 – 1967).

A refined and elegant portrait, this artwork reflects the skillful academic style of Charles Michel, with delicate attention to expression, light, and atmosphere. The artist signs the painting.

Charles Michel (1874 – 1967) was a versatile Belgian painter, watercolorist, illustrator, and poster designer. His body of work includes paintings, posters, and postcard designs.

His life and artistic career can be summarized as follows:

Artistic recognition and style:
Charles Michel achieved recognition throughout Europe and was appointed court painter to the Belgian Royal Family. As early as 1894, he exhibited at the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts in London. His style was refined and academically trained, while his later work showed increasing affinity with Post-Impressionism.

Connection with Mexico:
From the 1920s onward, Michel became strongly involved in the Mexican art world. In 1922, he served as director of the first exhibition of modern art in Mexico, held at the former San Carlos Museum. In 1946, he settled permanently in Mexico, where he continued working as an artist until his death.

This painting is at least 100 years old and remains a charming example of early 20th-century European portrait art.

Condition & Authenticity

The painting is of good quality and has been professionally inspected and described.

Several small restorations were carried out in the past. There is a very small loss of paint underneath the dog’s right eye (see photos). These signs of age and previous restoration are consistent with an antique artwork and contribute to its history and authenticity.
